In February 2001, LTOC hosted its first annual Greater Hartford Black Family Technology Awareness Week event. As the title suggests, the week was designed to bring a better awareness of computer use and technology to Black families in the Greater Hartford community during Black History month to close the "Digital Divide" – a concept that refers to the gap between those who have access to technology and those who do not.
As we concluded the 2009 Greater Hartford Black Family Technology Awareness Week, we received an update on the Digital Divide within the African-American community. In 2009, 42% of Black families have access to technology compared to 56% of White families. Although there is still a gap, it has narrowed significantly.
